Tampa Bay Rays didn’t have a tremendous offensive performance as they fell 2-1 to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner field.
Rockies don’t have an electrifying offense, but their defense catalyzed their victory against the Rays. One player who noticed how good the Rockies/ defense was was Rocky’s second baseman, Kyle Farmer.
“Dude, that was the best defensive game I’ve ever been a part of,” Farmer said after the game.
It wasn’t the most exciting game of the series or the year so far, but this game shows you that the game can be impacted by more than just the long ball and strikeouts. Rockies’ defense featured two outs at the plate by two-time Gold Glove-winning center fielder Brenton Doyle and 2024 Gold Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar.
Shortstop Taylor Walls got the only RBI for the Rays, which came in the eighth inning. Third baseman Junior Caminero went 3-for-5 with three hits and one strikeout. Second baseman Brandon Lowe went 2-for-5. First baseman Jonathan Aranda went 2-for-3 with two hits and one strikeout.
Designated hitter Yandy Diaz continues to struggle at the plate. Diaz went 0-for-5 on Saturday. Diaz is hitting .111 and has just one hit in nine at-bats this season. The eighth inning was the Rays’ best chance to rally, but Díaz grounded out to first baseman Michael Toglia and tossed it to pitcher Seth Halvorsen.
Rays went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Zack Littell suffered the loss. Rays will have Taj Bradley on the mound and try to secure the weekend series win for the Rays. The first pitch begins at 1:40 pm.
