Mason Appleton plays the hero on Monday afternoon as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2.
The 29-year-old developed the game-winning goal for the Red Wings with 45 seconds remaining in the game.Â
Dylan Larkin put the Red Wings on the board in the first period. It’s Larkin’s second goal of the season. In the third period, the Red Wings scored the second goal of the game by James von Riemadyk, which made it 2-0.
The Maple Leafs were not done and managed to rally. They scored two goals to tie the game in the third period by Matthew Knies and Calle Jarnkrok. Appleton ended any hopes for the Maple Leafs to win this game when he scored the final goal to seal the deal.
The Red Wings didn’t play their best game compared to Saturday night, but at the end of the day, they secured another victory. Goaltender Cam Talbot had a great night, making 38 saves.
Power play opportunities are something the Red Wings must get better at. The Red Wings went 1-for-4 in power play, had 20 blocked shots, and only won 37 percent of their face-offs. The Maple Leafs won 62 percent of their face-offs.
Detroit leads the season series 2-0. The Red Wings and Maple Leafs will meet again on December 28 in Detroit.
The Red Wings will be returning home to face the reigning defending champions, the Florida Panthers (3-1), on Wednesday night.
