Arkansas Razorbacks upsets No. 14 Michigan Wolverines in the Jimmy V Classic matchup, 89-87, at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
Razorbacks rallied from a 15-point deficit and improved to 8-2 in the season.
Boogie Fland scored 20 points for the Razorbacks. D.J. Wagner added 16 points. Trevon Brazile added 15 points and a key block on Vladislav Goldin with 14 seconds left.
The Wolverines shot 58 percent from the field. In the first half, they made 11 straight field goals.
Five Wolverines had double figures. Goldin led the Wolverines with 17 points, including 7 of 9 from the field and nine rebounds. Danny Wolf added 14 points.
Will Tschetter contribute 13 points off the bench, going 4 of 5 from the field and 3 of 4 from the three-point line.
The Wolverines committed 17 turnovers in this game, while the Razorbacks had 13. The Razorbacks outrebounded the Wolverines 34 to 32.
In his postgame interview on ESPN’s Sportscenter, Razorbacks coach John Calipari was critical about things he didn’t do well as a coach in this game. Still, he appreciated the fight his team showed against the Wolverines.
“I made some mistakes down the stretch,” Calipari said. “The out-of-bounds play stunk. I should have never changed what we were going to do, and I had Trevon come back for a ball when they were going to foul, and he missed, too. That’s on me. These kids fought and did everything.”
It’s the Razorbacks’ first win at Madison Square Garden since 1990.
The Wolverines will face the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners on Dec. 18 in Charlotte, North Carolina, while the Razorbacks will play against Central Arkansas on Saturday.
