How Jeffrey Lurie Transformed the Philadelphia Eagles

By Miguel Mike Medina

Billionaire Jeffrey Lurie has conquered his second Super Bowl victory in seven years as the Philadelphia Eagles owner.

Lurie bought the Eagles in 1994 for 185 million dollars and had to mortgage his family’s fortune to get the deal done. He received a lot of criticism, and people thought it was a dumb investment. Lurie proved everyone wrong that he made the right decision to invest in the team.

The Eagles had lost a great personality and defensive player in Reggie White when he left the team to go to the Green Bay Packers. Before Lurie took over, some things were being said about the stadium being infested with rats and other disturbing details, but Lurie changed the culture around.

Lurie has come close to many teams in winning a Super Bowl or reaching the Super Bowl. During the Andy Reid-Donovan McNabb era, the Eagles have gotten so close, but they had tremendous bad luck in losing in the Conference Championship games from 2001 through 2003.

The Eagles finally got to the Super Bowl in 2004 when they landed Hall of Famer wide receiver Terrell Owners but fell short to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. A sweet joy of revenge happened fourteen years later when the Eagles beat the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.

The Eagles got a second revenge, but this time against the Kansas City Chiefs. After losing to the Chiefs two seasons ago, the Eagles’ defense dominated Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. The game wasn’t even close. The Eagles are Super Bowl champions again. The final score was 40-22.

Lurie is a lucky man. It’s every sports owner’s dream to build a championship team. He did it the hard way. When many people thought he was crazy to come to Philadelphia, he thought otherwise and saw the vision of where he wanted to take this organization.

Lurie credits his grandfather, Philip Smith, for encouraging and implementing the idea in his brain to someday buy the Eagles.
