January 13, 2026, should be a day that the Detroit Red Wings and their fan base should never forget. We had an overtime win by the Red Wings and the jersey retirement of Sergei Fedorov.

Andrew Copp scored the game-winning goal for Detroit in overtime by the final score of 4-3. The Red Wings survived against the Carolina Hurricanes, who rallied after trailing 3-0. The Hurricanes deserve a lot of credit for fighting back.

Alex DeBrincat had a great night with three points. Patrick Kane is on the verge of passing an NHL legend: Mike Modano. Kane is four points shy of having the most by a U.S.-born player in NHL history.

Aside from the Red Wings winning at home, it was a special occasion for the organization to retire Fedorov’s No. 91 jersey before the game. Fedorov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015, his first year of eligibility. Ten years later, the organization felt it was time to have it done at the arena.

Sergei was part of the Red Wings’ “Russian Five,” which changed everyone for the organization. Five Russian players who were tenacious and whose style the fans loved do play.

Federov’s contributions were immense as he won three Stanley Cups with Detroit (1997, 1998, 2002). The 2002 team is arguably the best NHL team ever. One of his biggest regrets is leaving the Res Wings to play for the Ducks in Anaheim in 2003. He got to play for the Ducks in the Stanley Cup but lost to the New Jersey Devils.

Sergei becomes the ninth Red Wings player to have his number retired, joining his hall of fame teammates Nicklas Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman.

He finished his career as a 6x time all-star and won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 1994.
