Amazon has surpassed Walmart in sales. Walmart has been unstoppable in sales for the last 13 years. Amazon broke the streak.
Walmart is the world’s largest company. Walmart has been the king of sales for 13 years, and 21 of the last 24 years.
Amazon posted $717 billion in sales in 2025. Walmart recorded $713 billion in sales in 2025.
How did Amazon pull it off?
The Amazon Web Services division is one of the major factors contributing to the generated revenue. The majority of Amazon’s revenue last year came from sales on its online and physical stores as well as from third-party sellers.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has come a long way with the Company. A company that started in 1994 by selling books online has reached new heights by expanding into a variety of departments and maximizing opportunities.
Amazon brought in $129 billion in sales from its Amazon Web Services business. AWS provides computing, storage, and artificial intelligence services to companies and governments worldwide. Amazon dominates the U.S. market, accounting for 40% of digital retail sales. In addition, around 180 million Americans have a Prime account. Prime launched in 2005, and it’s been a game changer for the Seattle-based company.
Walmart was started in 1962 by Sam Walton. He’s also the brains behind founding Sam’s Club, which many customers love shopping at. Walmart’s stock recently surpassed $1 trillion in value. Walmart is now the second-largest e-commerce player in the U.S. with digital sales of some $120 billion a year.
Although Walmart lost to Amazon in sales, don’t count them out. Walmart is slowly getting its hands into the tech world, and they are going to make sure they don’t stay behind. They will be aggressive in advertising, media, and online marketplaces.
Walmart is also using Artificial Intelligence to its advantage. Sparky is the name of their generative-AI-powered shopping, which offers more conversational and personalized help.
Amazon is enjoying its massive success. When Amazon joined Hollywood to produce films and television, it made them more powerful. Amazon is responsible for Emmy Award–winning TV series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the Oscar-winning movie Manchester by the Sea.
Amazon and Walmart may be rivals, but both companies mean a lot to customers. Bezos and Walton set the standard for being very obsessive about customers. It’s the key ingredients that have made both companies successful. Now, their successors are carrying on the company’s legacy.
