American Airlines rejects the idea of a merger with United Airlines. For some days, stories have been circulating about the possibility of both companies coming together.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby considered the possibility and even approached President Donald Trump and the administration. American Airlines believes that this merger can’t happen because it would be bad for consumers. With that statement, Americans might never consider it even in the future.

It’s also a risky time for a merger because of everything that’s going on with the Iran war. When the merger news broke, it was a surprise given its timing. Many passengers are skeptical about traveling. Many don’t want to deal with TSA or anything that’s giving them anxiety or concerns.

Oscar Munoz, former CEO of United Airlines, recently spoke out before American rejected the merger. Munoz shared his thoughts in an interview on CNBC.

“Too big to disappear would be the, I think there would be a transition of some sort that would bring a little bit of order, but fuel prices dropped,” Munoz said. “It’s a reset. We’re not out of the woods yet.”

Robert Isom is the current CEO of American Airlines. Isom and Kirby have a history together. Both have been nemesis for years. In Kirby’s mind, United is a better airline than American. He’s very wrong about that statement. Isom and Kirby worked at America West Airlines in the 1990s. Both leaders were once a dream team, and one would think that everything changed when Isom took over the president role at American, succeeding Kirby after American West management took over at American Airlines.

Regardless, both men went on to higher levels in their positions and are extremely competitive. Kirky, 58, has been in aviation for 30 years. During the height of the pandemic, Kirky was named CEO of United Airlines.
