Texas A&M Upsets No. 1 Auburn: Historic Win Details

By Miguel Mike Medina

No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies pulled off an upset and beat No. 1 Auburn Tigers 83-72 on Senior Night.

It’s the Aggies’ first win versus an AP No. 1 team in program history. No fans rushed to the court after the Aggies win.

The Aggies shot 43 percent from the field. The Aggies guard led the team, and Zhuric Phelps led all with 19 points.

Although the Aggies didn’t win the rebound game, they outrebounded the Tigers 41-25. The Tigers won this game because of their practical shooting. There was excellent ball movement and great discipline offensively. The Aggies dominated the glass and second-chance points.

Turnovers were the Tigers’ biggest Achilles heel. They committed 13 turnovers in this game. Johni Broome has only been held to single digits for three games this season. Broome finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

He’s their best player and didn’t have it in him on Tuesday night. Tahaad Pettiford took his place against the Aggies. Pettiford led the Tigers with 19 points after shooting 6-of-10 from behind the arc.

It’s only the third Quad 1 or 2 loss for the Tigers in 24 games. The Aggies improve to 21-9, while the Tigers fall to 27-3.

Saturday is the final day of the SEC regular season. The Aggies will take on LSU on the road, and the Tigers will play against their rival Alabama Crimson Tide.
