The No. 19 Southern Miss Golden Eagles defeated No. 18 Ole Miss, 6-2, on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.

It’s a revenge game for the Golden Eagles, who lost to the Rebels 15-8 on the road on February 25. Therefore, winning Tuesday’s game lifted a huge weight off their shoulders.

The Golden Eagles improve to 15-6 in the season, 2-1 in conference play. Playing at home brings out the best out of them since they’re 12-3 at home.

Matthew Adams took the Mount for the Golden Eagles. Through 4.2 innings, he gave up six hits and two runs and struck out three batters. Five pitchers were used for the Golden Eagles. Colby Allen got the save, allowed just two hits, and struck out one batter.

The Golden Eagles attacked first in the first inning with two runs. The Rebels responded with two runs of their own in the top of the 3rd inning. However, the damage was done in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles erupted for four runs.

Shortstop Ozzie Pratt went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Davis Gillespie had 3 RBIs. Second baseman Nick Monistere and infielder Carson Paetow also picked up RBIs for the Golden Eagles.

Rebels starting pitcher Cade Townsend allowed two earned runs and recorded five strikeouts through three innings. Relievers Gunnar Dennis, Will McCausland, Hudson Calhoun, and Taylor Rabe combined for nine strikeouts.

Dennis is the only pitcher out of the bullpen that allowed runs. He gave up four earned runs, which came in the fifth.

Rebels infielder Mitchell Sanford drove the only two runs for the team. He finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Monroe to take on the University of Louisiana on Friday, March 21, at 6 pm EST. The Golden Eagles could use this as another revenge game since ULM won the previous match last April.

The Rebels dropped to 15-5 and now have a three-game losing streak. They will take on Missouri on Friday night to begin a three-game series.
