On Wednesday night, the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated James Madison 3-1 to complete the two-game series sweep.
The Mountaineers are off to a great start this season. The team improves to 18-1. They’re 6-1 at home and 12-0 on the road. The win over James Madison extends their winning streak to five games.
The Dukes continue to struggle. With the loss, they fall to 7-14 on the season.
The Dukes got on the board when sophomore Kyle Langley hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning. That’s the only mistake freshman starter David Hagen made against the Dukes.
Hagen settled down after that home run. Through five innings, he strikes out four Duke batters. He earned the win. The bullpen did their job as well. Reese Bassinger and Jack Kartsonas struck out several Duke hitters in the later innings.
Senior Brodie Kresser tied the game for the Mountaineers with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth inning, the Mountaineers scored two more runs without getting a base hit.
The best highlight of the game was when Sam White stole home plate. Before stealing home, he delivered a triple. It was a great heads-up running play by White.
Skylar King was the best hitter for the Mountaineers. He had a great night, going 3-for-3 at the plate.
The Dukes will play a crucial Big 12 matchup this weekend against the Arizona Wildcats, which begins on Friday night.
