Robinhood Co-Founder and CEO Vlad Tenev joins David Rubenstein for an interview.
Tenev went from aspiring mathematician to fintech entrepreneur, launching Robinhood to democratize finance.
He shared many details about his life and career as an entrepreneur. His story from college was interesting, and it led him to maximize opportunities.
“When I was in college, I had no idea I wanted to be an entrepreneur,” Tenev said. “I never thought of starting a financial service company. I wanted to be a mathematician to make exciting discoveries.”
2008 was an important year for Tenev. It was his first year in grad school, studying mathematics at UCLA. His co-founder found an algorithm trading firm job and convinced Tenev to start one. He had no clue what that was, but he knew it was an interesting opportunity he couldn’t refuse.
Tenev’s platform was big before the pandemic and became more successful during the pandemic. Robinhood has been used by many people, especially in 2019 and 2020. Robin Good became very useful and effective in those years.
Tenev shared some advice for anyone wanting to get started in the business or interested in trade and holding stocks.
“The traditional investment advice is to diversify and have a well-balanced portfolio,” Tenev said. “It’s interesting because nobody wants you to diversify as a founder. Shareholders don’t want you to diversify. They want you to maximize fully exposed, in fact, to one asset you are watching. It’s much more of a “put all your eggs in one basket.” For me personally, the rules are a little different than your conventional advice.”
Investing is the key to wealth when you think long-term. Studying the markets and investing in companies is essential for any aspiring investor.
Tenev is a wealthy man who has done his homework for many years and learned from his parents. He has risen from the ups and downs.
