Sentimental Value is becoming one of the hot movies to keep an eye on throughout this Oscar season. The film has caught the public’s attention following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. For New Yorker moviegoers, it caught their attention when it premiered at the New York Film Festival.
Joachim Trier directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Eskil Vogt. It’s Trier’s sixth feature film. He has written every single one of his films. The movie was shot in Oslo, Norway. It’s one of the best films of the year and a foreign language film of the year.
The story follows sisters Nora and Agnes, who reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father—and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their family dynamics.
It’s a movie that blends drama and tragedy. Therefore, be prepared to shed some tears, possibly, but that’s the power of cinema. A movie is awe-inspiring when the writing and performance make you feel some emotion or have a strong reaction.
Sentimental Value stars Renate Reisve as Nora Borg, Stellan Skarsgard as Gustav Borg, Elle Fanning as Rachel Kemp, and Inga Ibsdotter Lillieaas as Agnes Borg Pettersen. All of the actors have received outstanding praise for their performances. They received nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, and the movie itself got nominated for Best Motion Picture in Drama.
Is it possible for Sentimental Value to win Best Picture? Can they steal the show at the Oscars with multiple wins?
Sentimental Value has won many film festivals and award shows, including the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and more.
The movie premiered in North American theaters on Christmas Day. It has made $14 million at the box office.
