Top Gun and Tom Cruise fans will be happy to hear this fantastic news. Top Gun 3 is in the works. Paramount confirmed it, and Cruise will be back for the third film of the installment.
The announcement was made during a presentation at CinemaCon. Top Gun 3 is in development, and the screenplay is going through revisions. We hope the script delivers. Without a good script, the movie won’t be successful, no matter how good the actors perform. There is no news yet on who will be the director of the third movie.
Tony Scott directed the first Top Gun movie, which came out in 1986. Scott passed away in 2012. Joseph Kosinski directed Top Gun: Maverick. Kosinski achieved massive box-office success with Maverick. The movie grossed $1.5 billion worldwide. Kosinski also directed Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and 2025’s racing movie F:1 starring Brad Pitt.
Kosinski won’t be a bad choice for the third film. However, the studio might have other plans. In addition, Kosinski is working on other projects, such as a UFO conspiracy thriller, and plans to direct a new Miami Vice movie in the future.
Maverick received Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song (Lady Gaga and BloodPop’s “Hold My Hand”), Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg told Cruise that he saved Hollywood. It’s no bluff. You can find the video clip anywhere, especially on YouTube.
Cruise is the last true movie star in the industry. When you see his name in the movie poster, tons of moviegoers would want to buy a ticket to see him. That’s the power of being a huge movie star. Hollywood needs to bring back that same feeling, but they need to correct many things because too many distractions and unnecessary politics are getting in the way. The industry needs to build more movie stars.
Director Jon M. Chu would be a great choice to direct Top Gun 3. Chu has become a reliable director ever since the success of Crazy Rich Asians. Let’s see what David Ellison, owner of Paramount, decides and any other announcements he makes in the next couple of months.
